1. What is Afrigas?

Afrigas is the LPG brand proudly sold and marketed in Kenya by Vivo Energy Kenya Limited, previously known as Shell. LPG is an acronym for Liquified Petroleum Gas which is hydrocarbon gas stored in liquid for under pressure in cylinders.

4. What equipment/accessories do I need to use for my Afrigas?

To use Afrigas, you will need the following:
 
  • For a 6kg camping cylinder: A grill and burner
  • For a 6kg Supa Jiko: A low-pressure regular and hosepipe connected to a cooker.
  • For the 13kg cylinder: A low-pressure regular and hosepipe connected to a cooker.
  • For the 25 kg cylinder: A high-pressure regular and hosepipe connected to a cooker.
  • For the 45kg cylinder: A high-pressure regular and hosepipe connected to a cooker
  • 5. How do I safely transport my Afrigas?

  • You need to ensure your cylinder(s) is in an upright position on the vehicle floor and secured so it does not move. 
  • Do NOT leave the gas cylinder in an enclosed vehicle under direct sunlight. 
  • Do NOT transport the cylinder when lying down. Avoid transporting cylinders inside the passenger compartment.  
  • Keep the cylinder in a cool place away from flames, sparks and heat.
  • 6. How do I safely store my Afrigas

    Always store your Afrigas cylinder in an upright position, on a level surface and in a well-ventilated room. Do not store your Afrigas near any open fires, electrical appliances and power points or closed areas. Keep extra cylinders that you may have out of the kitchen. 

    7. Does LPG have odor?

    LPG is odorless in its natural state. For safety reasons an additive is added to provide LPG  a characteristic odor to alarm the user in case of a leak.

    8. How should I handle a gas leak?

  • You will detect a leak from the strong pungent smell of LPG.
  • Put off all naked flames such as matches and cooker burners.
  • Turn off the regulator and remove the regulator from cylinder valve.
  • Do NOT switch ON or OFF any electrical appliances, light switches or cell phones – this may create a spark which will ignite the leaking LPG and cause a fire.
  • Open all doors and windows.
  • Evacuate the cylinder outdoors to an open space if safe to do so.
  • Leave the house immediately, and only return after confirmed safe to do so.
  • Notify neighbors because LPG is capable of distance ignition and burning back.

    9. What can I do in case of a fire outbreak?

    In case of a fire outbreak raise alarm – Fire! Fire! Fire!

    If safe Turn off the regulator using a damp towel.

    Do not endanger your life by attempting to fight a fire.

    Calmly evacuate everyone from the house and call for help.

    10. Is it possible for me to exchange my Afrigas with any equivalent size from the nearest authorized dealer?

    All Afrigas cylinders of same size are fitted with similar valves and can be exchanged at Shell service stations, or authorized distributors.
